Natural Slate RoofingLaid to Last Generations— Wirral & Merseyside
Welsh and Spanish natural slate laid the way it should be: twice-nailed, on a breathable underlay, over treated battens, with proper lead detailing — a roof that outlasts three generations of asphalt substitutes.
Slating — what, who, when & why
What it is
Supply and installation of Welsh and Spanish natural slate on new-build, extension and re-roof projects, plus like-for-like slate stripping and re-laying on period properties across the Wirral.
Who it's for
Owners of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, period detached and semi-detached properties, conservation-area homes, and anyone re-roofing where original slate character matters.
When you need it
When existing slate shows widespread nail sickness, delamination, or has been overlaid with tile-effect substitutes on a previous re-roof.
Why professional matters
Natural slate is the highest-lifespan pitched-roof covering available in the UK — 80–100 years on Welsh slate, 60–100 on quality Spanish slate. Get the detailing right at install and the roof outlives the mortgage twice over.
What happens if you leave it
Damage escalation
- Nail sickness spreads across an elevation once it starts — the slates aren't failing, the wrought-iron nails are.
- Delaminated slates split under foot traffic and become falling hazards.
- Cement torching on old roofs traps moisture against the underside and rots the batten — a widespread issue on Wirral housing stock.
Common mistakes
- Using nail sickness as an excuse to change to concrete tile — often unnecessary and permanently reduces the property's character and value.
- Fixing slate with anything other than copper, stainless or (on smaller slates) properly rated aluminium nails.
- Cutting corners on batten grade — non-BS 5534 battens split under load and cause slate slippage.

Materials, methods & specifications
Welsh vs Spanish slate
Welsh slate (Penrhyn, Cwt-y-Bugail, Ffestiniog) offers 100-year design life and the traditional Wirral appearance. Quality Spanish slate (Cupa R, SSQ Del Carmen) offers 60–100 years at 40–60% of the cost — an appropriate compromise for many jobs.
Twice-nailed to BS 5534
Every slate is fixed with two copper or stainless nails through the head, on batten gauge set to slate size and pitch. Perimeter slates additionally clipped on the Wirral coast where wind uplift is higher.
Underlay & ventilation
Breathable membrane (Klober Permo Air or equivalent) with correct ventilation at eaves and ridge prevents interstitial condensation and keeps batten dry — critical for slate longevity.
Verge, ridge and hip detail
Dry verge and dry ridge systems as standard — no mortar to fail. Traditional cement bedding and pointing where planning conditions require it on listed buildings.
Reusing existing slate
Where original slate is sound, we sort by condition and re-lay, topping up with matching salvage. Cost saving typically 30–40% versus fully new slate, with the character retained.
Slating — your questions answered
How long does a slate roof last?+
Welsh slate installed correctly lasts 80–100 years. Spanish slate 60–100 years depending on grade. Failures usually trace to fixings, underlay or battens — not the slate itself.
How much does a slate re-roof cost?+
Every job is quoted free, fixed-price and itemised in writing after a no-obligation inspection — costs vary by pitch, access, materials and scope, so call 0800 043 1108 or request a free quote for a firm figure.
Can you reuse my existing slates?+
Often yes — we sort them by condition on the scaffold and re-lay the sound ones, topping up with matching salvage or new. This can reduce cost by 30–40%.
What's the difference between Welsh and Spanish slate?+
Welsh slate has the traditional appearance, tighter grain and 100-year design life. Spanish slate is well-suited to most modern re-roofs at lower cost, with 60–100 year life on quality grades.
Do you offer dry-ridge and dry-verge?+
Yes — as standard on new work. It replaces mortar bedding, which is the single biggest source of ridge and verge failure on older roofs.
Are your slate roofs guaranteed?+
Yes — 10-year HomePro insurance-backed guarantee on full re-roofs, plus manufacturer warranty on the slate itself.
Do you work on listed buildings?+
Yes. We work to conservation-officer specifications including like-for-like slate sourcing, traditional cement bedding where required, and correct heritage lead detailing.
Are you insured?+
£5M public liability and £5M employers' liability with Covéa Insurance plc.
